    Youth Substance Use Prevention

Deanna Valdez, Ph.D., LPCC, NCC, Licensed School Counselor

The landscape related to adolescent substance use has changed significantly in the 21st century. The substances used by teens today are quite different than those used even in the last few decades. Nationally, the age of first-time use is 14 years old; 11 years in New Mexico . As the landscape changes so must our approaches to prevention and intervention. This presentation will discuss how harm reduction, anti-stigma strategies and effective communication can empower adolescents and adults to work together to change attitudes and behaviors related to adolescent drug use.
