Introduction to Restorative Practices for School Counselors

Presented by Erin Chavez and Layla M. Dehaiman

In this professional development session, participants will explore the foundations and purposes of restorative practices. They will gain a clear understanding of the differences between traditional, punitive discipline and restorative approaches, and learn how restorative practices help create safe, supportive, and inclusive school environments for both staff and students. Additionally, participants will be introduced to two core practices—connection circles and restorative conversations, and will learn how these strategies can enhance and complement their school counseling programs.

    Ethics & AI

    Presented By Heather Fried

    March 19, 2026

    Virtual

    10:00 am to 12:00 pm

    2 CE hours available

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving part of today’s world, increasingly integrated into everyday   experiences across educational settings. As AI tools become more accessible to both educators and   students, school counselors must develop a foundational understanding of AI and its ethical and legal   implications. To support student well-being and uphold professional responsibility, counselors must be   able to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI and recognize when and how to   effectively advocate for students.

During this session, participants will examine the legal considerations of AI use in school counseling   programs, explore the ASCA Ethical Standards as they relate to emerging technologies, and engage in   discussion of real-world scenarios. Attendees will gain practical guidance to support ethical decision-   making and responsible AI integration within school counseling practice.

Free for NMSCA Members, $25 for Non-members
